Facebook Welcome Tabs of Pages in the Food Business

by Peg Corwin on October 17, 2011

What do pages in the food business put on their Facebook welcome tabs?  How do they use their custom landing page on Facebook?

To answer this question, I went to the Food category of our own Facebook Business Pages Directory, to see which pages used these tabs, and how.  (There’s also a Restaurant category, which we will also look at shortly.)

Facebook Welcome Tabs of  Food Pages

Cellar Angels

Facebook welcome tab of food pages: Cellar AngelsThe action step for a visitor on the Cellar Angels welcome tab is to become a member.  Offers of  information include featured wines, member pricing and charity affiliations.  Created with the NorthSocial app.

Crazy Steve’s Pickles and Salsa

 Exotic Cakes and Desserts

This tab gives us a visual taste of Exotic’s cakes and desserts.  Their action step is to become a Fan by Liking the page.  The copy promises that Likers will get updates, sneak peeks, food reviews and special fan-only offers.  Tab created with Wildfire app.

Flanigan Farms Natural Foods

This natural foods page has a welcome tab with multiple sections, undoubtedly created by adding widgets for each on a custom tab. (Vendor unknown.)  The top section is a view of their website, with active hyperlinks and javascript:

The next section is a welcome ticker with a custom message which offers these calls to action:  “Check out our custom oils on sale…Click here to check out our virtual wall, Click here to check our our information. Thanks for visiting.”

The third section is an ecommerce description and link to encourage visitors to move into purchasing mode.

Section 4 of Flanigan Farms’ tab offers the visitor the opportunity to share or comment on its page.

Section 5 is the familiar Fan box for Flanigan Farms.

Savina Creations

Savina Creations’ welcome tab uses a reveal (or “Like-gate”) to encourage likes, with the words “Unleash your senses.  Click here.”  (They sell infused olive oils.)  That Like is their action step.

A click takes you to the splash page of Savina’s website, which encourages the visitor to learn more.

Sweet Tooth

There are yummy-looking sweet treats in the graphic on the Sweet Tooth welcome tab.  And lots of calls to action here:  check out the menu, email, call, visit our website, Like us, follow us on Twitter.  (Maybe more emphasis on one or two would be more effective?)   In return for a Like, the visitor will get notification of seasonal items and Facebook specials and offers.

 Facebook Welcome Tab Observations

  • Out of  16 listings, less than a third in the Food category of our Facebook Business Pages Directory have custom welcome tabs.  The rest landed visitors on their walls or offer pages.
  • Enticements for visitors to Like these welcome pages include notification of seasonal items, Facebook offers, discounts, updates, sneak peeks, food reviews and a chance to will a gift basket.
